The Singles' Verse!
Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. – Psalm 73:25
(Author’s note: I wrote this sometime in the mid 90’s, when I was still single. I hope and pray that this verse blesses you who are single, as it did me.)
As single men and women, we often struggle with what to do with our solitude. Solitude can be a blessing – time to take care of chores, read, etc. But sometimes that solitude turns into loneliness, something that can be difficult to deal with.
Do you ever feel like everyone else is “getting theirs,” while you are left standing alone? Most of my friends are married. Sometimes I have wondered why it isn’t “my turn” yet. Psalm 73 brings us some helpful words.
Here, the psalmist recalls a time in his life where it seemed like the wicked were getting away with their wickedness while serving God seemed to bring no rewards. But as he is thinking this was the Lord reminds him of the way things really are!
Note that his lamenting carries on until verse 17. The key words are “until I went into the sanctuary…” Isn’t it amazing how our perspective changes when we come into the presence of God?
When the psalmist yields to God’s Spirit, his perspective on the wicked changes. Suddenly, their condition does not seem so carefree. And more importantly, he sees, with enlightened eyes, how much he really has!
In verse 23, this man comes to understand that he is never alone. Do we as singles remember that? We always have a Father, a Brother, and a Teacher, right at our side, right when we need Him.
In verse 24, he sees that his future is secure. He will have guidance for every day of his earthly life, and then he shall receive life eternal.
After seeing this, he seems to say, “What more do I need? I have my blessed Lord. Whatever the world has simply doesn’t compare!”
We will face times of loneliness, discouragement at seeing all of the happy couples around us, and uncertainty about our future. But it is then that we can find satisfaction and joy in our precious Lord Jesus Christ. “… God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever.” (verse 26)
It requires a step of faith to believe that God in Heaven can fulfill our longings here on earth. But…
1. God is almighty, all-wise, and can bring complete joy to any heart.
2. God isn’t just “in Heaven.” he is standing right there in your room, ready to fill you with His joy.
As a single, you have an opportunity to let Jesus Christ be the sole object of your affection, love, and fulfillment. And He will not disappoint!
May our wonderful Lord grant you His peace.
