“Affection For What?”

Sunday Morning Service 01/10/2021- Associate Pastor Tyler Bessa

“The changing of the heart, the effect of the Spirit of God on my spirit can only be done by God, but I have to want it. I have to receive it. I have to go to the source. It doesn’t just magically happen.” Pastor Tyler Bessa

The sermon addresses the complex relationship between God’s openness to humanity and our limited affections towards Him. It emphasizes how God has fully revealed Himself through Jesus Christ, yet our relationship with Him is often restricted by our own choices and distractions. The message explores how modern diversions like technology, social media, careers, and even ministry itself can become idols that pull us away from God. A key distinction is made between our innate spiritual hunger for God and our developed appetites for worldly things, illustrated by the quote: “You have been given a built-in hunger for God. It is when God created you, He put this in you, whether you know it or not. And now you may have no appetite for the things of God.” The sermon traces the progression of spiritual relationship from the Spirit crying “Abba Father” in us, to us crying it in agreement, and finally to actual obedience like Jesus demonstrated. Throughout, there’s an emphasis on the daily choice we must make to serve God, highlighting that partial commitment isn’t sufficient and that we need to separate ourselves from worldly attachments that hinder our spiritual growth.
